Charlie Danny Heatubun

Charlie Danny Heatubun is a botanist who was born in Manokwari, on December 6, 1973. He is the inventor of Areca Unipa.

He discovered the areca nut as an honorary researcher and visiting professor at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in England.

Heatubun completed his bachelor’s degree in forestry in 1997 at the Faculty of Agriculture, Cenderawasih University, Manokwari. Then, in 2006 he earned a Master’s degree at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), West Java, Indonesia.

Furthermore, in 2009 he completed his doctoral studies with summa cum laude predicate at IPB, and The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, England (UK). He continued his Postdoctoral studies at the same institution: the “Old World Palm Project” in 2011.

Before supervising the regional government bureaucracy, Charlie Danny Heatubun was a Professor of Forest Botany and Forest Resources the Faculty of Forestry, University of Papua.

Since 1998, until now, Charlie Danny Heatubun has been a member of national and international professional associations in the world of flora.

Since 2000, until now, he has produced 38 world-class research papers which have been published in various international journals.

Then, since 2003, he has joined as a member, consultant, and even leader in several activities related to local, national, and international Biodiversity, as well as other tasks for Regional Planning and Development.

In addition, since 2013, he has been an Honorary Research Associate at The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Richmond, England (UK).

Charlie Danny Heatubun, to date, was the first and only Indonesian accepted as a Fellow of The Linnean Society of London (FLS) – The oldest and most prestigious Natural History Society in the world.

He also performs his duties as Regional Apparatus Organization Leader (OPD) and Professor. In addition, since 2014, Charlie Danny Heatubun, has taught numerous courses in the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Environmental, Forestry, and Biological Sciences at the Graduate School of UNIPA. He has given public lectures at numerous universities at home and abroad.

From January 11, 2017, to July 19, 2018, he started his career as Government Bureaucrat (Assignment Officer). The Head of the Regional Research and Development Agency  of West Papua Province also performs his duties as Agency Secretary.

On July 20, 2018, he was appointed by the Governor of West Papua, Drs. Dominggus Mandacan, as Head of Balitbangda West Papua Province and has served until now.

In addition, in 2018, he was Chair of the West Papua Provincial Government Delegation at the Oslo Tropical Forest Forum in Oslo, Norway.

Then in 2019, the Gala Dinner for Conservation International and Elle Magazine Annual in Los Angeles, United States, where the Governor of West Papua, Dominggus Mandacan, was awarded the “Global Conservation Hero Award”.

In 2020, Charlie Danny Heatubun was involved in global research with 99 Botanists from 56 institutions in 19 countries for the first time. They summarized the data and made a list of all the plant species on the island of New Guinea.

The publication title is New Guinea has the world’s richest island flora. This monumental work was published in a prestigious journal and flooded all international and national media.

Charlie Danny Heatubun was the originator and the idea behind the Manokwari and Teminabuan Declaration. He is also the figure behind the ratification of Perdasus Number 10 of 2019 concerning Sustainable Development in West Papua Province, which is a commitment to protect a minimum of 70% of the forest area and 50% of the coast and sea of the total area of West Papua Province.
