People will be more moral, tolerant, and open to new ideas if they understand the purpose of local wisdom. So, they will solve the problems in a harmonious situation.
Indonesia has a sizable population that is dispersed throughout its vast territory. Every society in Indonesia has a set of values that form the cornerstone of daily living. Each communal group in its different regions adopts these ideals, which are then transmitted to the following generation. These principles are known as Indigenous or local wisdom and can be expressed verbally or in writing.
Local Wisdom and Its Importance in Society
To ensure it is sustainable and does not go extinct, local wisdom is one thing everyone must preserve. It should therefore come as no surprise that a growing number of campaigners are now urging the public to participate in local wisdom preservation programs across the globe.
Local wisdom serves many objectives, one of which is protecting natural resources in ways that are chosen by local ancestors. It is also useful in agriculture and as a source of historical knowledge.
In addition, local wisdom can be a solution to face the rapid flow of globalization. A community will lose its national roots if it abandons local wisdom since it will no longer possess its unique national traits.
By maintaining the characteristics of local wisdom, it will make it able to withstand foreign cultures and be able to integrate elements of foreign culture into the original culture, and be able to give direction to cultural development.
Harmonization Through Local Wisdom of West Papua
Meanwhile, The XVIII/Kasuari Kodam held a West Papua Harmonization event in 2021 with the slogan “With Harmonization, Through West Papua’s Local Wisdom, We Increase National Unity and Unity.” The purpose of this celebration was to honor the TNI’s 76th anniversary, the success of PON XX in 2021, and to promote social interaction among all strata of West Papua Province society.
In order to foster cohesion and equality among the several facets of West Papua’s society, culture, communication, religion, and gathering must be harmonious, conformist, suitable, and balanced. The West Papua Regional Police Chief, Inspector General of Police Tornagogo Sihombing, the Military Commander XVIII/Cassowary, Maj. Gen. TNI I Nyoman Cantiasa, the Governor of West Papua Doweeks Mandacan, and representatives of all races, faiths, and social strata were all present at the ceremony.
According to Pangdam XVIII Cassowary, in order for musical instruments to produce a melodic humming sound, they must all be compact. Similarly, if everyone is close together, it will form an exceptional unity.
The military commander also emphasized that Papua is an ancestral inheritance that its forebears fought to attain. All of these obstacles are surmountable if all parties have a common vision and aim. The main asset in overcoming difficulties is the cooperation of all parties.
Building Papua Together Despite Differences
The Governor of West Papua also stated in his remarks that West Papua is a part of Indonesia that is very diverse. Here, all tribes, faiths, ethnicities, customs, cultures, and arts coexist, and they translate into each group’s unique obligations and responsibilities.
The West Papuan governor emphasized that West Papua is developing and that all of the tribes in the archipelago play a part in those advancements.
He invited anyone who was already open to upholding the principles their forefathers had established by accepting all ethnic groups from the Archipelago and Papua itself to coexist alongside the West Papuans to play a role in and effect change in Indonesia in general and West Papua in particular.
Thus indigenous wisdom plays an important role in every aspect of social life in West Papua and in other parts of Indonesia. As the nation’s next generation, we must continue to preserve indigenous wisdom as part of our national identity.
