PON XX had been going on in October this year. The big sports event was held for the first time in the eastern part of Indonesia. The sports celebration had shown the success that the two provinces, Papua and West Papua, brought. Even though PON XX (Pekan Olahraga Nasional or National Sports Week) has passed, Papua and West Papua continue improving themselves.

Besides many new and great infrastructures following PON, the economics of Cendrawasih land has also shown rapid development. Here’s what the central and local governments said about Papua and West’s Papua economic growth.

Economy Growth

PON XX, which lasted from October 2 until October 15, was joined by 6,442 athletes who were accompanied by 3,000 couches all over Indonesia. The event gained huge success. Besides bringing positive impacts in sports aspects, the event has brought a great contribution to other aspects as well.

Many new facilities and infrastructure were built and tourism has been developing ever since. The facilities and infrastructure that have been built are hoped to support the Papua and West’s Papua economic growth. In the land of Cendrawasih, PON XX is considered as an economic recovery momentum in the non-mining sector.

It is a common thing that the periodic sport event will automatically advance the hosts’ economic factors. To have a positive long-term impact, the Papuan local government should utilize PON’s post-event infrastructure and product promotion.

The local government should be creative and innovative in creating continuing events in the future by using the new infrastructure. By doing this, hopefully, the economy will continue to grow. On this, Papua and West Papua can learn from the success of Palembang, Sumatera Selatan who can repeatedly exploit their new infrastructures after becoming the sports celebration’s host.

Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME)

Usaha Mikro Kecil Menengah (UMKM) or Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) are spreading following PON XX. Assistant for the Economy and People’s Welfare of the Regional Secretariat of Papua Province, Muhammad Musa’ad, in a press release in Jayapura via the regional website in Jayapura in September this year stated that UMKM owners keep up their business after PON and Musa’ad believed they will carry on with the work in the future.

Musa’ad went on saying that now coffee shops are showing up in many places. The tastes of their coffee are as great as the coffee sold by hotels and famous cafes in Papua and West Papua. These eastern provinces in Indonesia are known for having their unique and inviting coffee, namely Amungme coffee, Moanemani coffee, Baliem coffee, and Star Mount coffee. These coffees are not only known in Indonesia but also worldwide.

Musa’ad hoped from now onwards there will be more and more young people who have the vision to become young entrepreneurs. UMKM will also create many new job opportunities. Through PON XX, Papua and West Papua were able to show their awakening and autonomy of their regions.

This is, of course, in line with Governor Lukas Enembe’s vision, which is the revival, autonomy, and prosperity of Papua. This vision can be realized with the participation of the community business person and the government’s support.

During PON XX, there are also women in Jayapura creating and selling souvenirs of the event in the form of woven noken bags in several places.

Increasing Up to 1.5 Percent

Thanks to PON XX, Papua and West Papua’s economic growth increased up to 1.5 percent. During the PON event, Musa’ad revealed that Bank Indonesia estimated the economy could grow 1 up to 1.5 percent. Overall, the growth can even accelerate to 14 percent at the end of this year.

In the second quarter of this year, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Papua and West Papua grew by 13.14%. Naek Tigor Sinaga, the head of Bank Indonesia for Papua and West Papua, to Katadata revealed the contribution amount reached 1.2 up to 1.5 billion rupiahs during PON XX.

The 0.7-11 percent contribution was the only number that was reached during the sporting event. Far from the sports celebration being held, these two provinces have shown significant growth from several sectors.

Moreover, Musa’ad stated there was a lot of improvement in Papua, one of them was a gallery establishment that can accommodate the work of Papuan and West Papuan children. How the provincial government supported locals’ economy was not only providing funds but also offering goods that can be sold and creating business opportunities for them.

To elevate economic development, the economic or UMKM development’s working team was created. Hopefully, this team will take UMKM to the next level.

PON XX became a blessing for Cendrawasih Island. With many supportive infrastructures and new medium and micro businesses, Papua and West Papua’s economic growth will continue to happen.
