Currently, West Papua Conservation is increasingly advanced and recognized by the world. In West Papua, the community is actively developing this conservation. This certainly supports community progress and facilitates the conservation process because the people of West Papua are now increasingly concerned about the sustainability of the natural world around them.
To see the extraordinary performance of the program, please refer to the explanation in the article below!
West Papua: The World’s First Conservation Province
You need to know that West Papua is currently the first conservation province in the world. A decision at the DPRD Plenary Meeting strengthened this West Papua conservation province. A Special Regional Regulation for the Province of Sustainable Development or Perdasus on Conservation had been enacted at that time.
Conservation areas must have a sustainable element. Not only protecting the ecosystem, but the ecosystem provides benefits to the surrounding community.
This conservation will focus on protecting marine and terrestrial ecosystems, recognizing the rights of indigenous peoples, as well as promoting sustainable livelihoods in West Papua Province.
Not only that, but the decision of the meeting also placed conservation and sustainable development at the forefront of every development and economic activity in this province.
Even though conservation in this province has been around for a long time, the Perdasus on Conservation can act as a guard. With this regulation, all development in West Papua will be based on environmental regulations. In addition, the welfare of society is also an important focus.
This rule also guides related parties to develop natural resources according to original or customary laws. Moreover, the state has recognized the existence of the territory and indigenous peoples of Papua. Therefore, they need to be respected and get proper protection.
This latest nickname is the result of West Papua’s consistency since 2015. The province declared it would become a conservation province. After the declaration, changes in this field were also seen to be more advanced.
Example of Community-Based Conservation in West Papua
Because it has been declared since 2015, some conservation in West Papua is already underway. Some of them are:
1. Conservation of the Kokonda Tribe, Fak Fak
The Kokoda tribe is one of the tribes with a wide distribution in West Papua, namely in Fak Fak, Sorong, and South Sorong Regencies. The culture and its vast territory allow for conservation in this tribal area. .
In their conservation, this tribal community relies on local wisdom, namely:
Sea sasi is a hereditary culture in the management of marine crops. In this arrangement, there will be a division of the fishing area with different periods so that there is access time. There are also settings based on the type of catch at a certain period, This culture continues because the community believes their catches will increase due to natural blessings.
There is a local community culture that indirectly makes forest areas more sustainable and protected, namely sacred forests.
To enter, the community must obtain permission from the customary leader and perform certain rituals. If not, there will be consequences that await. This has made many local people and migrants cautious and afraid of destroying the forest.
This living pharmacy is one way to preserve local medicinal plants. Cultivation and application of community traditional medicine also have a conservation value.
2. Conservation in the Waters of the Bird’s Head Seascape
The government is working with the Nusantara Nature Conservation Foundation (YKAN) in this conservation. This collaboration seeks to ensure that conservation and resource management can occur sustainably.
This collaboration will encourage water conservation to be more developed. Indigenous peoples are also involved in this conservation.
Apart from the two examples and West Papua facts above, many other West Papua conservation activities involve the community. In this way, not only nature is preserved, but residents as well.
